Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty (or labia repair) is a surgical procedure performed to remove excess skin and tissue from the vulva for either cosmetic reasons or to increase physical comfort. The procedure changes the size and/or shape of the labia to make them smaller or to correct asymmetrical differences between them.

Women may experience a lengthening of the inner or outer labia (the lips of the vagina) due to aging, childbirth, pregnancy and more. When the labia majora or minora become extended, it can cause a woman to be self-conscious about the appearance of her vulva, but can also cause physical pain. As a result, women may abstain from sexual intercourse or wearing tight clothing and bathing suits. Following a labia repair procedure, women report feeling a boost in self-confidence and find physical activities more pleasurable.

The 3 Types of Labiaplasty

Labia Minora Reduction

Labia minora are the inner skin folds attached to the clitoral hood. It is common for women to experience a change in their labia minora after childbirth, while many women are born with it enlarged. Women experiencing these issues may benefit from a labia minora reduction surgery. This specific surgery involves a precise procedure and should only be performed by an experienced and specialized surgeon. This procedure helps improve the cosmetic appearance of the labia minora, as well as reverse any changes that may have occurred with childbirth or over time.

Majora Augmentation

Similar to lip augmentation performed on the face, during a labia majora augmentation procedure, injections are applied to the area to remove wrinkles and plump it up. Injectables such as Sculptra and Restylane are commonly used, as well as the patient’s fat from another area of the body. This procedure is typically performed with a labiaplasty, labia majora reduction surgery or botched revision.

Botched Revision

Botched procedures are, unfortunately, still being performed, which is why it is vital to select an experienced surgeon when seeking surgery. When revising a botched procedure, the exact surgical procedure will be unique to your body and your situation since all procedures vary. A botched revision may involve labia majora augmentation, vaginoplasty, minora or majora labia repair, clitoral hood reduction, or perineoplasty.
