Sacrocolpopexy
A procedure to help treat vaginal vault prolapse
Sacrocolpopexy is a procedure offered to correct uterine prolapse or to correct vaginal vault prolapse. Vaginal vault prolapse occurs when the upper portion of the vagina drops or sags down into the vaginal canal or even outside the vagina. It may occur alone or along with other types of pelvic organ prolapse. The prolapse commonly affects women who have had a hysterectomy and the vagina lacks support without the uterus. Other common causes of vaginal vault prolapse include menopause, childbirth, and extreme physical activity.
Sacrocolpopexy Symptoms
Vaginal vault prolapse is one of the several types of pelvic organ prolapse. Symptoms can be painful and affect a woman’s lifestyle.
Symptoms include:
- Weak urinary stream, straining to urinate, and difficulty emptying the bladder
- The feeling of pressure in the vagina or of falling into the vaginal canal
- A bulge of tissue that may protrude from the vagina, and the need to apply finger pressure to the bulge to urinate or empty the bowels
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Vaginal bleeding and discharge
Sacrocolpopexy Procedure
Reconstruction is achieved with an open abdominal technique or with the use of minimally invasive techniques. The treatment approach is chosen by the type and degree of pelvic organ prolapse, as well as the severity of symptoms.
In a sacrocolpopexy procedure, surgical mesh is attached from the vagina to the sacrum to correct the anatomical position. When the position is fixed, bulging and pressure sensations in the pelvic area and urinary incontinence are relieved. The mesh material used is permanent and will not dissolve over time. This procedure typically takes about 50 minutes, with minimal pain, and the patient can usually go home the same day. Most women recover well from this surgery in six to eight weeks.
