Urogynecology

Urogynecology is the evaluation and treatment of female pelvic organs, their supporting muscles and tissues, and pelvic reconstructive surgery.

Organs in the female pelvis share connected tissue, and when one of the organs is injured the others are at risk of being damaged as well. For example, this is why women who have recently given birth vaginally suffer from urinary and fecal incontinence, tears, fistulas, and an overactive bladder. Women also often experience pelvic organ prolapse from any heavy lifting done throughout their lives. Pelvic organ prolapse is a urogynecological condition in which an organ drops from its’ natural place within the pelvis and can cause women high discomfort and pain.

Common Disorders Treated by a Urogynecologist

  • Urinary incontinence — Leaking or loss of bladder control
  • Overactive bladder — Urge to urinate frequently
  • Pelvic organ prolapse — Weakening of the pelvic muscles that causes the internal organs to drop
  • Emptying disorders — Difficulty of going to the bathroom
  • Pelvic discomfort — Pain or burning in the pelvis

When to See a Urogynecologist

Women who are experiencing any of the symptoms above should consult with a urogynecologist. Prolapse or other organ problems like incontinence commonly affect women’s quality of life, but they don’t need to. These issues are fixable, consulting with a urogynecologist leads women to safe and effective options to reclaim their quality of life, and relieve symptoms of pelvic floor disorders.
