Urge Incontinence
Urge incontinence is a sudden, intense urge to urinate causing an involuntary loss of urine.
Urge incontinence is a strong urge to urinate even when the bladder isn’t full, often resulting in leakage. It may also cause you to have to urinate more frequently, which can interfere with everyday activities.
Causes of Urge Incontinence
Health conditions such as diabetes, neurological disorders and infection can interfere with the brain’s ability to send messages to the bladder via the spinal cord, limiting a person’s ability to hold and store urine. Constipation and a history of poor bladder habits, such as going to the toilet before the bladder is full, can also cause urge incontinence. It can become more common with age but this isn’t always the case. In some instances, the cause is unknown.
Managing Urge Incontinence
The goal in managing urge incontinence is to improve control of your bladder by reducing the strong urge sensation, increasing the period of time between visits to the toilet, and increasing the storage capacity of your bladder. A bladder diary can help you identify your pattern of passing urine and when leakage is occurring. This information will help your doctor in determining the right treatment solution for you.
