Pelvic Reconstruction

A group of surgical procedures used to treat pelvic organ prolapse

Pelvic organ prolapse is a condition that occurs when the muscles of the pelvic floor are weakened or damaged, often due to childbirth, repeated heavy lifting, chronic disease, or surgery. Your pelvic floor is a complex layer that usually functions well until too much stress is placed upon it. It consists of the ligaments, muscles, connective tissue, and nerves that support and control the bladder, vagina, uterus, and rectum. The pelvic floor is vital, as it holds the structures in your pelvic in place. When the pelvic floor loses its support and begins to fall, each of the pelvic organs loses its support and prolapse downward.

While rarely life-threatening, pelvic organ prolapse can be a condition that hampers a woman’s quality of life and hinders normal activities. Pelvic organ prolapse can cause pain with sex, pelvic pain, vaginal looseness, sexual dysfunction, back pain, bladder leakage, problems with defecation, and many more issues.

Pelvic floor reconstruction restores the normal structure and function of the female pelvic organs and is used when nonsurgical treatments aren’t effective. There are several procedures available for pelvic organ prolapse, depending on the type of prolapse drooping.

Types of Pelvic Prolapse

There are four types of pelvic organ prolapse:

Cystocele and Urethrocele – Loss of bladder support. A bulging of the upper front vaginal wall where a part of the bladder bulges into the vagina. Also known as a prolapsed bladder, it may result in women experiencing urinary incontinence (loss of urine), frequency, urgency, and retention.

Rectocele – A bulging of the upper rear vaginal wall where a small bowel portion bulges into the vagina. Women may notice the bulge when standing leads to a pulling sensation and backache that’s relieved when lying down.

Enterocele – Loss of upper vagina support and loss of vaginal sidewall support

Uterine prolapse – When the uterus drops down into the vagina
